When you see someone who’s gorgeous, fit, and healthy, you probably wonder what her secret is. Fitness strategies and diet paths are different for everyone — even among celebrities. There’s a wide range of available diets and exercise regimens. For a handful of top actors and models, the secret to their health and fitness is the blood type diet, an idea that started with a book by naturopath Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo.  So, what is the blood type diet?

Learn more about it and find out whether it’s right for you.

What is the Blood Type Diet? – The Basics

Dr. D’Adamo believes that “knowing your blood type is an important tool for understanding how your body reacts to food, your susceptibility to disease, your natural reaction to stress, and so much more.” In theory, blood type is the key to figuring what you should eat in order to be perfectly fit and healthy.

Sounds great, right? On D’Adamo’s website, you can simply select your blood type (O, A, B, or AB) and discover your blood type profile.

  • Type O— Time to go fishing! Fish, lean meat, and poultry are the order of the day for people with type O blood. Pair these main courses with ample helpings of vegetables and small amounts of grains, dairy, and beans.

  • Type A— Skip the meat, except on rare occasions. This blood type needs plenty of fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and beans.
  • Type B— Put chicken, corn wheat, lentils, peanuts, sesame seeds, and tomatoes on the “no” list for this group! Type B individuals need eggs, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, and plenty of green veggies.

  • Type AB— According to Dr. D’Adamo, AB-type people sometimes have low stomach acid. They should pass on smoked meat, cured meat, caffeine, and alcohol. Instead, AB types need to fill their plates with dairy, green veggies, tofu, and seafood.

Miranda Kerr’s Blood Type Diet Adaptation

Australian model and former Victoria’s Secret Angel Miranda Kerr follows the blood type diet. On her blog, she mentions some of her eating habits.

“I am a blood type A and more often than not I eat specifically for my blood type (following Dr. John D’Adamo’s blood type eating plan). I also eat low GI, high alkaline foods, drink filtered water and eat mostly fresh produce and very little meat,” she explains.

Due to her struggle with anemia (low iron), she also consumes “a lot of sea vegetables, pumpkin seeds, nuts and iron-rich vegetables.”

For Miranda, another favorite consumable is organic coconut oil. She takes in about 4 tablespoons each day, either by cooking with it or including it in her green tea.

More Famous Followers of the Blood Type Diet

Other celebrities who love the blood type diet are English singer and dancer Cheryl Cole, actress and model Demi Moore, and actor/producer Jason Lee. Friends TV actress Courteney Cox Arquette and Estée Lauder model Elizabeth Hurley adhere to the blood type diet as well.what is the blood type diet

The Downside

The blood type diet is fairly strict and doesn’t allow much room for flexibility, even in the area of condiments and spices. It also specifies the kinds of exercise that certain blood types should do.

Plus, the cost of the specialty foods, herbal supplements, vitamins, and organic foods recommended for the diet can add up quickly. And the science behind the book seems like a bit of a stretch.

So, now that you know what is the blood type diet, would you do it? Or, more importantly, should you do it? Well, as with any restrictive diet, it’s likely that you would lose weight— and as you know, I’m all about the veggies! So those are two points in favor of Dr. D’Adamo’s strategy.

If you want to try the blood type diet, go for it! Just be sure to check with your doctor first to ensure that none of the blood type diet recommendations conflict with an existing care plan for a chronic condition, such as diabetes.
